Homemade Corn Chips [Vegan, Low Fat & Gluten Free]

Coming up to the holiday season means attending or hosting parties where snacks will tempt you. A common food you'll find served up is corn chips and salsa. You think to yourself that you'll have only one chip, but before you know it it turns into a handful.

While store bought salsa is rather low in calories, the same cannot be said about corn chips. You would be surprised at exactly how much fat there is in a serve (50g) of corn chips: approximately 25% fat. However you can avoid all that fat by simply making your own at home.

You can find the 1kg bags of Corn Meal/Flour in the International Foods section of many Coles Supermarkets. At a little over $3 you can make five batches of these corn chips for what you would pay for one bag of corn chips in the stores.

These taste just like plain corn chips, instead oven baked without any added oils. Try adding onion or garlic powder, chilli flakes or even nutritional yeast to the batter for different flavours.

Ingredients

2 tsp Orgran Egg Replacer
1 Cup Fine Corn Meal
1/2 - 3/4 Cup Warm Water
Optional: Pinch of Salt

Directions

Preheat your oven to 200 degrees Celcius
Combine the egg replacer and corn meal in a bowl, adding the water a little at time while stirring
Begin moulding the dough with your hands to see if it needs any more water

The dough will be quite delicate as it's gluten free, so it's best to roll out between baking paper, or a silicone mat and cling wrap liked I did

Roll out the dough to about 2mm in thickness

Use a knife or pizza cutter to make 2 inch triangles

Place the tray in the oven and cook for 20 minutes, turning the chips halfway through the cooking process
Remove from the oven and allow to cool before consuming
Store the chips in an air-tight container

Makes 4 serves
