[Product Review] Norbu: The Ancient Natural Sweetener

From the people who brought you Natvia, comes Norbu. While Natvia is made from the stevia plant, Norbu gets its sweetness from the monk fruit. From the Norbu website: Monk Fruit is a round, green melon that has been traditionally cultivated in the remote hillsides of central Asia for centuries. The fruit grows on lush vines and is protected from the sun by the misty shade of the mountains. Its incredible sweetness comes from unique, naturally occurring antioxidants which have an enchanting sweet taste, but without the calories of sugar. If this blog is anything to go by, it's well documented that I am a huge fan of stevia in both its granular and liquid forms, however some people say they aren't a fan of taste of stevia. It's hard to describe, but Norbu does actually taste different to Natvia. I think most people would have a difficult time telling this apart from normal sugar. When it comes to using Norbu in baking, it's quite simple. If a recipe calls for 1 cup of sugar, substitute it with 1/2 cup of Norbu; basically 50% of what is required. I find that Norbu dissolves faster liquids than granular stevia which is convenient no matter if you're adding it to a cup of coffee or baking something. The last thing you want is to find granules left at the bottom of your cup, or over-whipping butter or cream due to the granules not dissolving; these problems will not be an issue when using Norbu.
