[Product Review] Vitacost Organic Shelled Hemp Seeds

I have been reading about the benefits of hemp seeds for some time, but the one thing that always turned me off was their exorbitant price.

Hemp seeds and hemp products grown in Australia are not marketed or sold as intended for human consumption. Australia is one of the few countries in the world where hemp is not deemed a food. For years groups have been trying to change this, however it's slow going.

I'd love to support Australian businesses, however $55 for a kilo of shelled hemp seeds is just not a financially viable choice for me and many others. This is where Vitacost saves the day.

You can purchase three bags of the Vitacost brand Organic Shelled Hemp Seeds (368g) for just $22.65 as they're currently on sale. That's a 60% saving and music to my ears.

Benefits of hemp seeds

Their nutritional profile is second to none, as it's considered a complete protein, containing all the essential amino acids. In laymen's terms, they're an ideal source of plant-based protein, as well as omega-3 and -6, for vegans and vegetarians.

Hemp seeds are also high in vitamin B1 and minerals such as Iron, Magnesium, Manganese, Phosphorus and Zinc.

Taste

They have a sort of nutty flavour, but nothing too strong or over-powering. The rather neutral taste to hemp seeds makes them perfect for either sweet or savoury dishes. Versatility is always an important characteristic for the products I buy. Getting more bang for your buck is always a good thing.

How to use hemp seeds

You can literally top anything with hemp seeds: yogurt, smoothie, salads, homemade granola (a new recipe coming soon from me) and soup.

My favourite? A Ryvita smothered with peanut (flour) butter and a sprinkling of hemp seeds. Yum!
